Of course, you can start at either end but I tend to start in Winston by turning southeast onto Main Street, which becomes Weasel Creek Road (FSR405). 1 mile from the highway, Weasel Creek takes a sharp right turn. There is a street sign there to help.
This route takes you up to 7790 feet and affords some great views (when the air is clear) of Canyon Ferry Lake and other areas on the other side. There are also a number of old mines and mine buildings to explore. I have often seen deer, elk and even a black bear on this route.
At approximtely 11 miles from the highway/Winston, Weasel Creek Road (FSR405) intersects with Indian Creek Road (FSR360). Weasel Creek Road goes right and Indian Creek Road goes left. My route here goes left, but going right can eventually come out in the same location on Indian Creek Road, by Townsend.
The rest is even easier. Just follow Indian Creek Road for another 12 miles to the highway, just outside of Townsend.
Alternate route: If at the intersection where Weasel Creek Road (FSR405) intersects with Indian Creek Road (FSR360), you take a right, instead of the left discribed above, you then contenue on FSR405 to Eagle Guard Cabin, where the road changes to FSR4031. FSR4031 eventually interstects with Indian Creek and you again, end up just outside Townsend.
It is an interesting area to explore.
